【May 4 2014】The Celebes crested macaque sleeps in the tree canopy, but spends more than half the daylight hours foraging on the ground for food, primarily fruit. Found on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and a few small neighboring islands, the species is critically endangered due to hunting. (They eat crops planted near their habitat.) They have long faces like their distant cousins, baboons, but with reddish-brown eyes, an uncommon trait among primates. Averaging less than two feet tall, they're on the short end of the spectrum for macaques. Maybe the tuft of black hair on the head is supposed to make them look taller?Explore breathtaking Gallery from the HuluTrip homepage over the past 5 years..
