【December 25 2014】Finnish wilderness huts were originally built and owned by nearby villagers. Nowadays, anyone walking or skiing by is welcome to come inside. By Finnish law, it's "every man's right" to have free access to wilderness. Finns take this seriously. Since the 18th century, log huts along walking routes have been available to travelers free of charge. Today, the huts are maintained by the Metsähallitus, a state-run forest management organization. Visitors follow several unwritten laws, such as "Sopu sijaa antaa" (Harmony gives room). This requires visitors who've stayed the longest to make room for newcomers.
