【December 22 2014】Star-shaped paróls are the iconic Christmas symbol in the Philippines, as central to the season as the Christmas tree is in Western cultures. During the Christmas season in the Philippines, the Star of Bethlehem is represented by a festive lantern called a paról. These lanterns were traditionally made of paper and bamboo and illuminated by candles. But when electricity became available, paróls evolved into elaborate light shows, incorporating dozens, even hundreds of lights. Today, paróls adorn homes from September through January.
