【November 10 2014】If this Toronto neighborhood looks familiar, blame the efficiency of mass production for neighborhoods, first pioneered in the States to meet the demand for housing during the baby boom. When vets returned from WWII, they created instant demand for housing on a massive scale. Enter real estate developer William Levitt, inventor of the suburb. Levitt had learned mass-production techniques while serving in the Navy. In 1947, with the help of his brother and father, construction on Levitt's mass-produced homes began in the Long Island hamlet that now bears his name. By the summer of 1948, they were finishing 30 homes a day. Using simple floor plans and innovative methods, Levittown set a standard for suburban developers for decades to come.Explore breathtaking Gallery from the HuluTrip homepage over the past 5 years..
