Xiuguluan River starts in the Central Mountain Range, flows north along East Rift Valley, turns east at Ruisui Township, crosses Coastal Mountain Range, and empties into the Pacific Ocean at Dagangkou. 104 km in length, it is eastern Taiwan’s largest river and the only to cross Coastal Mountain Range. Xiuguluan Canyon, located in the downstream portion between Ruisui and Dagangkou, is home to over 20 rapids, magnificent sights, and interesting rock formations, having become a popular spot for white water rafting. The white water rafting route starts at Ruisui Bridge and lasts about two hours, passing several rapids and a beautiful suspension bridge before arriving at the most dangerous rapids, which must be navigated before reaching Qimei Rest Area. After Qimei, the canyon takes on a different beauty, as the river becomes deeper and wider and has a series of whirlpools and rapids, which is the height of the experience. By the time Changhong Bridge comes into view, the river has widened out and run smooth again, and the journey comes to an end at the scenic intersection of Changhong Bridge. The entire length is 24 km and takes 3-4 hours. Rafting takes place all year round, though April to October is peak season. The trip usually starts around 7-12AM, and rarely in the afternoon; starting after 3PM is prohibited. In 2010, in addition to rafting ecology package tours, a new Rafting Ironman Event was organized, including biking, running, and extreme sports.
