Seoul City Tour Bus
A Great Way to See Seoul Highlights in a Day
First of all, I love the fact that it's a hop-on, hop-off bus and that buses run every 30 minutes. You could ride all day with one ticket! I took my friend who recently moved to Korea on the Seoul City Bus Tour (the downtown, single-decker bus tour), and it was very efficient to see all the important sights we wanted to see. We got on at Gwanghwamun (the starting point of the tour) and then got off again at Itaewon so we could visit What the Book, a huge English language bookstore. Then, we got on the bus and got off again at Myeongdong to do a bit of shopping. Finally, we boarded the bus once more and got off again at Insadong so we could see the Insadong street and then proceed to the Cheonggyecheon stream. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend using the bus tour to get around the museums and palaces, since if you spend a lot of time at those places, it would be more efficient to take the subway.
Regardless, the audio headsets on the bus are very informative and interesting to listen to.
Personally, I think the Seoul City Bus Tour is an absolute must for newcomers to Korea, since it's comprehensive, cheap (only 10,000 won/person), and condensed.
Best Way to Seoul Attractions
This hop on, hop off bus is the best & the cheapest way to go to most of Seoul's attractions. It starts in Ganghwamun Square & there are 3 courses you can choose to take but you can also get on it in the bus stops along its route. The downtown course on the single decker bus is the best choice because it goes to most of the palaces & all the other important attractions like the Korean War Memorial, the Namsanngol Hanok Village, the Namsan Park & N Seoul Tower, the Cheongwadae or the Blue House, the National Folk Museum of Korea, Itaewon, Myeongdong
& many more. The double decker bus is more expensive & it goes only to a few palaces & some markets. The night course is not really good also because there are no stops. There are headsets provided in all seats & you can choose your language from the menu so you more or less have an idea about the places along the route.
Getting Arround Seoul
I got on the Bus without prior reservation and there were plenty of seats left. I noticed that the drivers do stop at the designated route stops but only very briefly if he doesn't see anyone waiting. Make sure you wait at their bus stop and don't walk away. Even when the bus stops it doesn't wait it'll leave right away if no ones there. One couples complainant was the stops weren't being announced so that they missed a few places the wanted to go to. If the driver doesn't turn on the programmed narration ex. "The next stop is the Korean War Memorial". Then you'll miss it. Best thing is to grab the route map of the tour and count the stops to your destination. Another option is to talk to the bus stewardess and tell her we're you want to stop and have her remind you where to get off. Remember though you're ultimately responsible for keeping track of your own destination.
Good Introduction of Seoul
Easy to use Hop-on Hop-off bus service, recommended for a first day in Seoul. There are several routes, but I only tried the central one, which visited various palaces, museums (the National Museum and the War Museum), the Seoul Tower and a range of shopping spots. Really good value for 10 000 Won. Best to do a complete trip and to then get off at selected places the second time around. Onboard commentary in several languages via headphones. Buses seemed to stick tightly to the schedule (every half hour), so you can get off for 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, etc. You can catch the bus anywhere along its route.
