With the completion of the Guangzhou Opera House, one of the landmark of Guangzhou, and the growing popularity of some famous Western opera like the phantom of the Opera and My Fair Lady introduced by Guangzhou Opera House, opera as an form of art revives in Guangzhou.
In fact, Guangzhou was once a wonderland of opera--the Cantonese Opera, which is now on the edge of extinction. Before it does, let's take a glimpes of this antique and valuable art in Guangzhou!

1. Guanghzou Opera House
Designed by world-famous architect Zaha Hadid, and needing a full six years to build, the Guangzhou Opera House is set to become one of Guangzhou's New Seven Landmarks. The theater looks like two glowing oblong stones, sitting besides the Pearl River. The larger stone contains
the main, 1,800-seat theatre,art exhibition hall and recording studio. The smaller stone houses a multi-functional 400-seat theatre, wtith  rotating stage.
Guangzhou Opera House hosts a varity of performances, large and small, national and international. Depending on the month, the opera house holds between four and twelve shows, mostly Chinese opera, Chinese drama, concerts and modern dance.

2. Other five top Guangzhou Venue for opera
No.13 Theater
Located inside the building of Guangzhou Drama Group in Shaheding, Guangzhou, it' s named – very simply - after its street number. Originally the rehearsal place for the Guangzhou Drama Group, No.13 Theatre was built by the Guangzhou government at a cost of over 2.5 million yuan,
covering an area of 900㎡, and seating 300. It' s the first dedicated theatre for experimental drama in Guangzhou, and China' s only facility able to host both large-scale and intimate productions. Modern Dance, Experimental Drama and Traditional Opera can all be staged there, as well as meetings, exhibitions, movies and television work.

They do not currently show acts in English, but the management is considering it for the future. The average price of a show here is 60-100RMB, very reasonable for Guangzhou. The Guanghzou Drama Group, which performs nearly every weekend at No.13 Theatre, is as acclaimed as the theatre itself, having won more than 40 awards, including best director, best actor, best stage design, best story and best playwright.

Sapphire Art Space
The 200-seat Sapphire Art Space was actually a movie theater between 1990 and 2005, but is now a multi-functional space for theater, dance, concerts, art exhibitions and cocktail parties. You can even still catch a movie here from time to time.
Sapphire Art Space has its own newly-formed art group who specialize in developing local drama talent, and producing high-quality plays. They put on plays roughly one week per month, giving a performance nearly every day.
