The whole event is actually called Bun Luang, a mass merit-making ceremony organised with the aim to celebrate the return of the Prince Vessandorn (the last life before he became Lord Buddha) and to worship Phra That Si Song Rak, the highly-revered Buddha stupa for both Thai and Lao people.

The parade is the highlight part of the Phi Ta Khon Festival. The local people, mostly male, dress in ghost costumes and wear huge masks made from carved coconut-tree trunks, topped with wicker work and sticky-rice steamers, would dance and strike amusing poses to the cheerful crowds as they parade around town. It seems like the mixture of Halloween and the Basil Carnival. The masked-dance parade takes place in the morning and lasts a few hours.

The most prominent group in parade is the farmers with clubs in their hands. From head to feet, their bodies are covered with earth. They have no masks. Be careful. They are so pleasure to scare people by hugging them.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, this parade not only shows the Thai clothes but also arouses people’s attention of fertility and prays for a good harvest.
