Granite rocks off Flinders Island, Tasmania, Australia (© Aurora Photos/Masterfile)
【November 13 2016】Flinders Island is the largest of the Furneaux Group, a small chain of islands in the Bass Strait between Tasmania and the Australian mainland. These smooth, partially submerged granite rocks typify the distinctive natural features of the island. Much of the coastal and mountain landscape is preserved within Strzelecki National Park. And with relatively few permanent human residents, the island as a whole is home to numerous small mammal colonies unique to this part of the world, including wallabies, potoroos, and pademelons. If you plan to visit, be sure to bring some warm clothing because the Furneaux Group is right in the path of the strong westerly wind pattern known as the Roaring Forties.
