Elephant Village
The Elephant Village was opened in Pattaya in 1973 as a sanctuary for former working elephants. These elephants, through reasons of injury or ill health, can no longer be used as a part of the backbone of heavy work in the jungles of Thailand. Also because of their diminishing habitat, it is now longer possible to return them to the wild.
Review on Elephant Trekking
"Amazing experience"
My friend and I did this trip and it was well worth the money , we had a 4km trek across fields and through some water , a white knuckle ride back in a land rover (if it makes it!).You get to see Thai lifestyle out in the open air with a variety of other animals running free along the route, you can feed them for a 100 Bart bag of bananas as well. The only thing we didn't like was that our elephant was a bit slower then the others and he seemed to be forcefully encouraging him with the aid of a stick until I asked him not to, we were shocked as this is an animal sanctuary. The other point was that the handler actually asked for a tip instead of waiting for us to give it to him, this aside we would definitely recommend it.
