【November 18 2014】Welcome to Sommarøy, an island that’s part of the sprawling municipality of Tromsø, Norway's largest city in the Arctic. Sommarøy is about 22 miles west of the city of Tromsø, and only a few hundred people live in the village year round. But the island attracts many visitors who are drawn to its natural beauty and quaint, traditional fishing village. Winter this far north means the sun usually rises just above the horizon for a couple hours each day from November to January, a phenomenon called Polar Night. But Sommarøy is snuggled between the Lyngen Alps and various other peaks. So this time of year, “daylight” means just a few hours of twilight, bathing the island in a glow that only looks warm. Average daytime highs hover around freezing.Explore breathtaking Gallery from the HuluTrip homepage over the past 5 years..
