Reindeer in the countryside near Karasjok, Finnmark, Norway (© GS/Gallery Stock)
【December 16 2013】In North America, we call them caribou. But here in Norway and other Scandinavian countries, these mighty beasts are reindeer. Their pelts have two layers, a thick, wooly insulating layer closest to the skin, and an outer layer with longer hair. The farther north they live, the smaller they are, which also helps conserve body heat. But perhaps the reindeer's most interesting adaptation to battle the cold? Their nostrils have elongated turbinate bones that increase surface area, helping to warm the icy air before it ever reaches their lungs.Explore breathtaking Gallery from the HuluTrip homepage over the past 5 years..
