China's weightlifting contingent features just four women and six men, the maximum quota determined by the combined team standing (by points) at the past two World Championships. This means winning a spot on China's Olympic weightlifting squad can be a more competitive test than the Olympics itself. They usually train six days a week at the national sports training center. And because of it, China’s weightlifting has always been in a dominant situation in all kinds of international events, including this year’s 2016 Olympic Games.

Men:  

1. Long Qingquan - 56kg Class

Long Qingquan from China won a gold medal in men’s 56 kg weightlifting after he lifted a staggering total of 307 kg during his last attempt at the snatch, clean and jerk. He has broken a new Olympic and world record of 307 (2kg over the existing record) that had previously stood for 16 years.

2. Shi Zhiyong - 69kg Class

He snatched a competition best of 162kg and (squat) jerked a massive 190. he tried to break Liao Hui’s world record total record but it wasn’t there today. He’s still young and will have more attempts in the future.

3. Lu Xiaojun - 77kg Class

Lu Xiaojun proved to have the strength during the snatch by setting a new Olympic and world record of 177kg. He jerked 202 but placed second on bodyweight

4. Deng Wei - 63kg Class

Deng Wei lifted Olympic gold with a world record in the women’s 63kg category. Deng lifted 147kg in the clean-and-jerk and 115kg in the snatch for a combined 262kg which broke the record held by Lin.

5. Xiang Yanmei - 69kg Class

China’s weightlifter Xiang Yanmei suffered a sickening-looking accident when she dropped the bar - loaded with 118kg - on her head, but somehow recovered to win Olympic gold.

The first-time Olympian was on her final lift on the snatch when she lost her grip, the bar slamming her in the back of the head and whiplashing her neck. After a breather, she eventually lifted a total of 261kg, winning gold in the women’s 69kg category.
