Nmed one of the top ten Parades in the world by IFEA, the Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco is one of the few remaining night illuminated Parades in the country. Started in the 1860's by the Chinese in San Francisco as a means to educate the community about their culture, the Parade and Festival have grown to be the largest celebration of Asian culture outside of Asia. Since 1958, the parade has been under the direction of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce.

Over 100 units will participate in the Southwest Airlines® Chinese New Year Parade. A San Francisco tradition since just after the Gold Rush, the parade continues to delight and entertain the many hundreds of thousands of people that come to watch it on the street or tune in to watch it on television on KTVU Fox 2 or KTSF Channel 26, 6:00-8:00 p.m., on Saturday, February 11, 2017.

Nowhere in the world will you see a lunar new year parade with more gorgeous floats, elaborate costumes, ferocious lions, exploding firecrackers , and of course the newly crowned Miss Chinatown U.S.A. and her court. A crowd favorite is the spectacular 268' Golden Dragon ("Gum Lung") It takes a team of over 100 men and women from the martial arts group, White Crane to carry this dragon throughout the streets of San Francisco.

This year's Southwest Airlines® Chinese New Year Parade promises to warm your heart and electrify your senses, come rain or shine.

Chinese New Year Parade San Francisco Route Information

The Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade begins at 5:15 pm at Second and Market Streets, proceeds west on Market to Kearny, north on Kearny to Post, west on Post to Powell, north on Powell to Sutter, east on Sutter back to Kearny, then to Columbus Avenue, where the parade will disperse.

Streets along the route will close to traffic beginning at 5 p.m. and will reopen once the parade has passed and the route has been cleaned. Market Street between Second and Fremont Streets and Second Street between Market and Mission Streets will be closed beginning at 4 p.m. to accommodate the parade staging area. Market Street cross traffic will be allowed until 5 p.m.

Parade in Macau

On Lunar New Year's Day, January 28, 2017, the official start time of the parade is 8:00 pm, regardless of the official start time, you want to make sure to come at least a couple of hours earlier and get a good spot as you can expect everybody and their cousin will be on the streets that night.
Anyhow, the entertainment begins way before the start of the parade. As early as 6:00pm you are likely to see the roving performers entertaining the early birds along the parade route with their lively shows, anything from dragon dances, acrobats in stilts, drummers, etc.

If you have tickets for the spectator stands, they start to open at 7:00 pm.

There will be street closures on the day of the parade as stands are being set up and near the time of the parade the route will be roped off.
This year's Lunar New Year parade highlights are TBA, last year's featured Star Wars characters with Darth Vader and Storm Troopers taking to the streets of Hong Kong.

The first floats start from around the HK Cultural Centre at 8:00 pm and the rest will follow for the next hour and a half or so. The last floats will reach the end point at around 10:30 pm.

The holiday officially kicks off with the annual New Year’s Day Parade (8 February 2016), which is a fantastic event, highlighted by the 238-metre long dragon that winds its way through the streets of the Historic City Centre.

The parade is a true spectacle, beginning with drummers and 18 lion dancer tandems. Mascots of the twelve zodiac animals as well as the gods of Fortune, Prosperity and Longevity are also on hand, passing out lai see (red packets) and wishing good luck to all who attend the ceremony and parade.

BEST SPOTS TO WATCH THE PARADE

RUINS OF ST.PAULS

The Ruins of St. Paul’s staircase is the starting point for the parade and the staging area for the dragon and parade performers, making it a popular spot for spectators.

For approximately 90 minutes before the parade you can see the dragon wrapped up on the steps leading to the Ruins.

This is a breathtaking sight against the backdrop of clear blue skies.
After the eye-dotting ritual to awaken the dragon, the parade begins and the dragon starts slinking its way through the World Heritage area.

If you watch from the Ruins of St. Paul’s and are handy with a map, you can then make a beeline for St. Augustine’s Square to watch it pass by again.
You’ll need to be quick however as this dragon moves surprisingly fast once started

SENADO SQUARE

Senado Square is another great spot to enjoy the Chinese New Year’s Day Parade. Like the Ruins of St. Paul’s, this area will be teeming with festive activity; including musical performances, lion dances and firecrackers.

Arrive early if you want to be seated during the parade. Otherwise, be ready to stand and enjoy. Listen for the drums and brass and keep an eye out for the dragon as it makes its way through the square from the Ruins of St. Paul’s.

ST.AUGUSTINE'S SPUARE

If there is a hidden gem to the holiday period in Macau, it is being on St. Augustine’s Square during the New Year’s Day Parade.

While Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul’s are packed with crowds, only a handful of wise watchers know to come here to await the dragon, which slows down and pauses for pictures in front of St. Augustine’s Church.

Best vantage point for photos and videos are found on the higher grounds at the Dom Pedro V Theatre, just across from St. Augustine’s Church.
