Based on the World Health Organization (WHO) report in 2015, an estimated 2.6 million people in South East Asia became sick with tuberculosis (TB) disease and 784,000 were reported died due to TB. As an acute infectious disease, antibiotics are the main treatment for TB patients but misuse of antibiotics has contributed to a rise in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). In 2015, 110,000 TB patients in South East Asia were confirmed as MDR-TB patients. MDR-TB is highly contagious and hard to treat because the disease is resistant to antibiotics. Dr. Ali Wibisono, International Relations Lecturer at Universitas Indonesia, gave a lecture on geopolitical analysis to build national and international security. The session was a part of Global Health Diplomacy training that was held on August 25-29, 2017 in Jakarta. In order to prevent and control the increasing burden of MDR-TB and other antimicrobial resistance diseases, INDOHUN gathered 30 young practitioners with health educational background in the Global Health Diplomacy training. They developed policies on antibiotics usage and healthcare. The training that was held on August 25-29, 2017 brought 10 diplomats and lecturers as trainers:
The training participants held simulation of Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) emergency meeting for 3 days in a row. The meeting resulted in draft resolutions to tackle health and security challenges in ASEAN Member States. The training itself directed young practitioners to strategically think in negotiation and decision making. In the long run, Global Health Diplomacy training could prepare new leaders in the health sector that will represent Indonesia in international forum.
