To sum it up. Peanuts are an ancient food from south America - certainly western hemisphere. Here in America they are commonly eaten in all forms, including peanut butter. Our personal peanut butter is ground peanuts and a little salt. No sugar. Here in San Francisco I can get any bread I want. PB&J sammiches, as we call them, are on neutral "sandwich bread" that you buy in the grocery. Bread sliced into squares so as to make all sorts of sandwiches with them. I'm guessing there are at least a million of them a day consumed in America, probably more, and no, I'm not exaggerating. Peanuts are a good source of protein, it's not pastry at all.

The bread they eat in the USA is actually pretty close to pastry.

It's not like the rye bread you would be used to. That is available, of course, but most eat white or whole wheat bread, the texture of which is similar to a dense croissant. The bread is sweet enough that you can eat it on it's own and it still tastes good.

Chocolate spread is used by some, but not the majority. A lot of people use something called Nutella, which is a hazelnut chocolate spread.

Jam and peanut butter on toast is virtually a standard breakfast.

I was talking online to some British folks about what they eat and telling them about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches....and was suprised they had never heard of it. We eat white bread...we either toast it with butter, or make sandwiches out of it. It is more standard to eat at lunch. It is very good...Nutella or chocolate is not standard to eat on bread...I have seen it sold with cracker sticks. Its okay...but PBJ has been around for a long time and lots of people here do eat it....mainly kids. We dont eat bread like ruisleipa
