The names 'Stratford' and 'Stafford' are derived from 'streat ford' which meant a place where a road forded a river. Since fords used to be very common in pre-industrial England there are lots of villages called Stratford, Stafford, etc, around the country. The two best known and largest Stratfords are 'Stratford-on Avon' in Warwickshire (the place where William Shakespeare was born) and a suburb of London usually called 'Stratford, East London'.
