Salineras de Maras, Sacred Valley, near Cuzco, Peru (© Enrico Martino/SIME/4Corners)
【November 24 2013】Right outside the village of Maras, Peru, is this terraced hill of salt pans. A subterranean stream of salty water bubbles up through the earth, and as the water evaporates, the salt is left behind. Locals have been collecting the salt for centuries. The current system works on a co-op structure: Anyone can pan for salt, as long as they agree to follow the community rules.Explore breathtaking Gallery from the HuluTrip homepage over the past 5 years..
