It’s fake, according to sources who have used the upcoming iPhone with a 4-inch display. Instead of releasing a smaller version of the iPhone 6s in order to appease potential customers seeking an iPhone with a screen smaller than 4.7 or 5.5-inches, Apple is upgrading the existing iPhone 5s that was first released in fall 2013. The new device is internally codenamed “N69,” but the launch name will likely be the “iPhone 5se.” The “se” suffix has been described in two ways by Apple employees: as a “special edition” variation of the vintage 4-inch iPhone screen size and as an “enhanced” version of the iPhone 5s. Indeed, the upcoming “5se” features a design similar to 2013’s flagship but upgraded internals, software, and hardware features that blend the old design with modern technologies from the past two iPhone upgrades.

The "5SE" name is not the weirdest thing about this phone, however. 9to5Mac reports that the 5SE will support Live Photos. That's really strange because the 5SE apparently won't have a 3D Touch display. It's really easy to imagine how Apple could make Live Photos work without 3D Touch — just use a long press — but it also kinda sorta speaks to the shortcomings of 3D Touch: that it often feels like a long press could accomplish all the same things. Nonetheless, it makes sense that Apple would want to spread Live Photos in an attempt to make them a popular picture format.

Possible Part Leaks

Towards the end of January, an image surfaced depicting Apple's alleged 4-inch iPhone next to an iPhone 5.
The 4-inch iPhone in the photo appears to be the same size as the iPhone 5, but it includes iPhone 6s design elements such as curved glass edges, thinner bezels, a relocated FaceTime camera, pill-shaped volume buttons, and a power button that's been relocated to the right side of the device.

The alleged 4-inch iPhone in the image matches rumors that the device will have a curved cover glass like the iPhone 6 and 6s, but it clashes with rumors suggesting the 4-inch iPhone will adopt an iPhone 5s design.

Because we can't confirm the veracity of the image, it should be viewed with some skepticism until additional design images of the 4-inch iPhone become available. It is unlikely to be an actual functional iPhone, but it could be a design mockup used by case makers. There's also a possibility that it is a fake device altogether.
