A groundbreaking, digital-first Olympic Channel will launch 21 August following the closing ceremony of the Rio 2016 Games, the International Olympic Committee announced on Wednesday

The free online channel will be will be available year-round, at anytime, anywhere and on any device at olympicchannel

” “The launch of the Olympic Channel is the start of an exciting new journey to connect the worldwide audience with the Olympic movement all year round,” said IOC President Thomas Bach

      “Fans will be able to follow sports, athletes and the stories behind the Olympic Games

The Olympic Channel will inspire us all and reach out to new generations of athletes and fans

” The Olympic Channel will broadcast original content and live sports events, news and highlights, as well as features on elite athletes as they pursue their athletic ambitions

The programming will showcase events and people from around the world and will initially be offered in English

Additional services will include video-on-demand and a user-friendly mobile app with subtitles in nine additional languages

  After the launch of the global digital network in August, the Olympic Channel intends to grow partnerships with Olympic stakeholders such as global rights-holding broadcasters and national Olympic committees to develop localised content and additional channels

By providing a platform for continuous, ongoing exposure of Olympic sports and athletes in the years between Summer and Winter Games, the Olympic Channel aspires to engage young people, fans and new audiences

The channel will also allow fans to experience highlight moments from an extensive archive and view content on an array of devices, including smartphones, tablets and computers worldwide on Android and iOS
