As the first Australian athletes settled into their accommodation at the Rio 2016 Olympic Village, their men's hockey team and chef de mission, Kitty Chiller, met with Rio mayor Eduardo Paes in front of their new digs on Wednesday (27 July)

Paes presented the Australians with a ceremonial key to the city, while Chiller presented the mayor with a toy kangaroo

It was a tongue-in-cheek gesture – Paes had joked that he would organise for a kangeroo in the Australians' apartments after they had postponed their move into the village on its opening day on Sunday as the final prepations were still being made to their accommodation

The first Australians moved in on Tuesday evening

"I recognised the problems that we found," said Paes

"I have come here to make a formal apology

I did not make fun of the kangaroo

I understand it is a symbol and I have my kangaroo here now," he added with a laugh

"My second country at the Olympics will be Australia and with the yellow shirt it's going to be easy

" Chiller said they initially though the key was to their apartment block, before realising its wider significance

"The Australian Olympic team is now the proud owner of the keys to the city of Rio," she said

"After many months of banter, we finally met the mayor face to face, which was fantastic, a really nice moment

That's something we have noticed – the passion, commitment and willingness to help has been outstanding

Chiller said: "This key represents the Olympic spirit

" In total, 249 more athletes moved into the Village on Wednesday, taking the total to 849

At peak times, the village will host more than 17,000 people
