Five reigning Olympic gold medallists and five current world champions are among the 126 athletes named in the USA's track and field team for the Rio 2016 Games

Following the conclusion of Team USA's Olympic trials, the athletics powerhouse has announced an intimidating team for the first edition of the Games to be staged in South America

Among the star attractions are Ashton Eaton, who will attempt to become the first athlete to successfully defend an Olympic decathlon title since Great Britain’s Daley Thompson in 1984, and sprinter Allyson Felix, a four-time Olympic champion

Felix will run the 400m and 4x400m relay, but she will not defend her Olympic 200m gold medal after missing out on the third place in the US team at the trials; Jenna Prandini's finish-line stumble gave her a photo-finish victory over the four-time Olympian

Prandini will be among 84 first-time Olympians in the US track and field team in Rio de Janeiro

The other three athletes who won individual titles at London 2012 – when the USA again topped the athletics medal table with 29 golds – are Brittney Reese (long jump), Christian Taylor (triple jump) and Jenn Suhr (pole vault)

Several past Olympic champions from the USA will also compete in Rio, including Justin Gatlin, who won the 100m title at Athens 2004 and will enter the 100m, 200m and 4x100m this year

He won gold in the 400m and 4x400m at Beijing 2008

Both men will likely have to go up against Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt, who is set to defend his 100m, 200m and 4x100m titles from Beijing and London

The five reigning world champions in the team are Eaton (decathlon), Felix (400m), Taylor (triple jump), Tianna Bartoletta (long jump) and Joe Kovacs (shot put)

Bernard Lagat, who qualified for the 5000m and will compete in his fifth Olympic Games, will be the oldest athlete on the team at 41, while the youngest is 400m hurdler Sydney McLaughlin, who is just 16
