Michael Phelps added another chapter to his legend on the evening of Wednesday (29 June)

Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history, claimed his place at Rio 2016 in style by winning the 200m butterfly at the USA Olympic swimming trials in Omaha

Watched by eight-week-old son Boomer and fiancée Nicole, and roared on by the Nebraska crowd, Phelps saw off the rise of a new generation to win his signature event in a time of one minute and 54

84 seconds

He saluted cheering supporters with five fingers held high

There was no mistaking the message; Phelps is coming to his fifth Olympic Games "I am at loss of words for it," Phelps said

"Being able to get five (Olympic Games) is pretty awesome

" With his victory on Wednesday, Phelps becomes the first male American swimmer to participate in five Olympic Games, matching the achievement of women's swimming icon Dara Torrres, a 12-time Olympic medallist from the USA

Tough times A couple of years ago, a Phelps's appearance in Rio looked like a distant prospect

Seemingly disillusioned with swimming and even with life, Phelps retired briefly after London 2012, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and even spent some time in a rehab clinic

“I think just that with everything that’s happened, and being able to come back, that was probably harder than any other swim I’ve had in my life," he said after sealing his place on Team USA

"I was just excited, because I had the opportunity to make my fifth

God, I’ve been in this sport a long time

” Michael Phelps announces he wants to compete at Rio 2016 Olympic Games Phelps has dominated the 200m butterfly for more than a decade; on Wednesday, he became the first swimmer to hold four USA Olympic trials titles in a single event and the oldest male trials champion in history

In his first Olympic Games, as a 15-year-old at Sydney 2000, Phelps finished fifth in the 200m butterfly

He went on to win gold at Athens 2004 and also at Beijing 2008, where he set a world record

After only winning silver behind Chad le Clos of South Africa at London 2012, he is now eager to make amends in Rio

Ominously for rivals coming to Rio, Phelps said he wasn't satisfied by his performance in Omaha

“I am not 100 per cent pleased with the time, but I have a month to get ready

I didn't really feel that good tonight, but getting on the team was the most important thing, and that's the only thing I had to do tonight

So I tried to take it out and prayed to God that I was going to hang on

”   For Phelps, who turned 31 the day after the race, age seems to be no barrier to his Olympic quest

At Omaha, he will also be competing in the 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley

Few will bet against him adding to his haul of Olympic medals, which currently stands at a record 22 (18 of them gold)

Phelps was not the only Olympic swimming star to book a place at Rio 2016 on Wednesday

In the women's 200m freestyle, Missy Franklin put recent disappointments behind her to finish second behind a dominant Katie Ledecky

“That was probably the most proud race of my entire career

I was telling myself I’m not done fighting,” Franklin said after the event

“People say there’s nothing like making your first Olympic team, but there’s really nothing like making your second Olympic team

It’s moments like this where you just have to sit back and say, ‘You did it

’”  A model of sustainability, Olympic Aquatics Stadium for Rio 2016 Games is unveiled Between the two of them, Franklin and Katie Ledecky have a haul of six Olympic medals – five of them gold – from just one Games

At Rio 2016, the two will form a formidable partnership in the 4x200m freestyle relay

"I think our relay is going to be awesome," an excited Franklin told reporters on Wednesday night
