Spanish tennis great Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the Wimbledon tournament, which this year will take place from 27 June to 10 July

Nadal, who suffered a wrist injury last month that forced him to withdraw from the French Open, is focused on being ready to take part in the the Rio 2016 Olympic tennis tournament from 6 to 14 August

On his official social media profiles, Nadal said: "After talking to my doctors, and receiving the results of my last medical revision, I won’t be able to play at Wimbledon this year

As you can all imagine, it’s a very tough decision, but the injury I suffered at Roland Garros needs time to heal

" On Wednesday (8 June), one day before Nadal made his announcement, his uncle and trainer Toni Nadal told Spanish newspaper Sport: "We have not set a date for his return because we don't want to endanger Rafael's participation in Rio 2016

" The Spaniard won the Olympic gold medal in the men's single event at Beijing 2008, defeating Fernando González of Chile in straight sets

Nadal did not participate in the event at London 2012 because he was not in the right physical condition

He said at the time that it was one of the saddest decisions of his career

At Rio 2016, Nadal will not only be on a mission to recapture Olympic gold; he will also have the honour of leading the entire Spanish team into the Maracanã as the country's flagbearer

As well as competing in the men's singles, in the mixed doubles he may form a formidable-looking partnership with compatriot Garbine Muguruza, who beat Serena Williams to win the French Open last week
