Margareth dos Santos Moura, known simply as Magá in Brazil, has become a sensation on social networks, where she is known for her unapologetic blackness and carefree style

The 28-year-old from Bahia is a symbol for black pride and female empowerment among today’s millennial generation, especially for black girls and women

Magá returned to her home town Feira de Santana this Wednesday (25 May) where she carried the Rio 2016 Olympic torch in front of hundreds of fans

She celebrated the fact she was chosen to carry the Olympic flame because of her message of diversity, which she promotes to her thousands of social media followers, many of whom suffer the same prejudices she has experienced

“It was a big deal being chosen because I have become an inspiration for other people

I am very proud to have transformed the lives of women, men, gays, lesbians

I would never have imagined that my self-confidence and ability to love myself would bring so many opportunities,” Magá reflected

Today she has over 120,000 followers on Instagram, where she shares different hairstyle tips and looks for black women

“My biggest reward are the girls that follow me and look up to me

I want for all of them to continue recognising their beauty, wearing what they want to wear, styling their hair how they want to

Wig, no wig, bald, ginger, straightened, in braids, doing whatever they want with their lives and being happy,” she said

Before her leg of the torch relay Magá talked about her difficult adolescence in São Paulo

“I suffered a lot when I arrived in São Paulo, I was lost, coming from a small town

I suffered a lot of bullying; they made fun of where I was from, of my big forehead, called me the ugliest in the class

” However, Magá explained how she did not let this weigh her down and how she always believed she was beautiful deep down

“My turn around came between 16 and 17 years old, when I discovered make-up

Boys started to flirt with me

Obviously recognising your beauty makes us more confident, happier

That was the key to my self-confidence, my own empowerment

But with all of this Magá always finds time to run, a passion of hers: “Running for me is a hobby that has changed my life, it’s not just about health, it’s therapeutic, it leaves me feeling lighter, more enthusiastic, I sleep much better and I never get ill

” She went on to joke that she wished she had had more time carrying the torch: “I run really fast, I don’t know how to jog, I could’ve gone slower to enjoy the moment even more

” With the Olympic Games on the horizon, Magá sent out a message to tourists coming to Rio later this year

“Enjoy Rio de Janeiro, put on your best clothes and go out with a smile, full of self-confidence

I hope you have an incredible experience; Brazil welcomes you with open arms

Come and be captivated by the energy of this amazing country and enjoy Brazil in its entirety
