Banditburi Village (반딧불이마을), or Firefly Village, is located in Muju, Jeollabuk-do.
There are three types of fireflies that live in Korea: unmunsanbanditburi, aebanditburi and neutbanditburi.
While aebanditburi and neutbanditburi emit a bright light, unmunsanbanditburi shines a dimmer light.
Aebanditburi can be seen in early summer whereas neutbanditburi comes out in early fall.
Fireflies are generally most active between 8 and 9 pm, and the males and females emit different levels of light.
The ones with a dim glow, no wings and found on leaves are females; those emitting a brighter light and flying furiously in the night sky are the males.
Though there is a relatively high population of fireflies in Muju county, the local government also makes a considerable effort to actively protect the insect.
It has been noted that out of 1.4 million species of insects, the firefly is the only one that emits light.
In appreciation of the fireflies Muju hosts the Banditbul Festival in the early summer each year.
