An old man who back-flips several times after stumbling over his walking cane, a crazy martial arts family, two hilarious burglars, and a son-in-law who transforms from wimpy bookworm to ruthless fighter when his glasses are taken off -- these are the characters that make up Jump, a non-verbal performance that combines martial arts and a comedic slapstick narrative into an eighty-minute-long acrobatic spectacle.
The show starts off with a light-hearted tone, as an old man (the supposed "stage manager") wobbles out of one of the seats in the audience and asks an unsuspecting theatergoer to help him up the stairs onto the stage. He then spends another five minutes making his way to the spotlight, where he finally yells in his high-pitched, hoarse voice: "JUMPU!!!"
Held at Jump Kung fu Theater in Seoul, Jump follows a family of eccentric martial artists -- an oddball grandfather, a goofy husband and gutsy wife, their beautiful daughter, and their alcoholic nephew -- all living in a traditional Korean home where their daily goings-on are ruled by Grandfather, the patriarch of the family.
