Tokyo Imperial Palace
The Imperial Palace, where their Majesties the Emperor and Empress reside, is situated in the center of Tokyo. The palace is surrounded by a water-filled moat and tree-covered grounds - a precious taste of nature within the bustling metropolitan city.
Tokyo Imperial Palace mainly contains four parts, including Kokyo Gaien (Imperial Palace Outer Garden), Kokyo Higashi Gyoen (Imperial Palace East Garden), Kita-no-maru-koen Park (Imperial Palace North side) and Tokyo Imperial Palace grounds; the former three parts are open to the public, while the last one is prohibited to enter.
However, there are only two special days of the year when the public are able to enter the grounds, January 2 (New Year) and December 23 (Emperor Akihito’s birthday), when the Imperial family makes a public appearance on the balcony of the Tokyo Imperial Palace. A popular photo spot is located in front of the beautiful Niju-bashi Bridge that stretches over the moat in the outer gardens near Tokyo Station.
The moat situated near Kita-no-maru-koen Park is a classic spot for viewing the glorious cherry blossoms. This is the area in Tokyo that boasts of having the largest number of people coming to view the cherry blossoms during the beginning of April.
Senso-ji Temple
Founded in 628, Sensoji Temple is the oldest temple in Tokyo. Many people believe that the Asakusa Kannon deity enshrined here has the ability to bestow benefits on earth, and around 30 million visitors from throughout Japan and abroad visit the temple every year.
It was the center for the development of Edo culture, and these traces still remain today. Many seasonal events are held including the Hozuki (Chinese lantern plant) Market and Hagoita (wooden paddle) Market. The huge lanterns hung at Kaminari (Thunder) Gate are very famous throughout Japan.
Nakamise-Dori Street
Nakamise-Dori Street is approximately 250 m long approaching from Kaminarimon Gate to Sensoji Temple. It is said that Nakamise Dori is one of the oldest shopping streets in Japan where numerous stores lines up on this approach with various products sold here.
Japanese-style goods are the most popular among young tourists from abroad, such as hair accessories, Japanese clogs, wooden dolls and chiyogami (colored paper), folk art products; classic Japanese food is also popular.
