The 2016 Olympics in Rio has witnessed the archery grand slam by Korean archers winning 4 gold medals, including men’s group, women’s group, men individual, women individual champion. It is the first time in history that a country claims all 4 gold medals in archery competitions. Also, the women’s archery team has been the eighth-time champion.

Though the rules of archery have changed, Korea still got the champion. Why they are so good at archery?

Being a part of national archery team is harder than winning gold medals.

Up to now, no woman archer can win two titles in a row. While asking why it is difficult to be two-time champion Ki Bo-bae, the 2012 individual champion, she said: “ If I don’t have to compete with my teammate, I will remain the champion.”

To most archers in Korea, Being a part of national archery team is harder than winning gold medals. There are qualifying competitions for the national team by strict selection, earnest assessment. It will pick 120 archers from 150 by holding more than 10 competitions. Then choose both 12 men and women to take part in the 3 assessment matches. After that, there will be left both 4 men and women archers. Washing out one archer in both team, the rest of 3 are the national team to attend the Olympics.
