It is believed the snack can clear away inner heat and toxic materials. Grass jelly is made by boiling the a stalks and leaves of Mesona chinensis with potassium carbonate for several hours with a little starch and then cooling the liquid to a jelly-like consistency. Cantonese people mainly use Mesona chinensis from Mei County to make the snack. And you often find vendors selling it along the streets in Chaozhou–Shantou area when summer comes. |
