You will then head to the Amazon lodge's office in town (a maximum of 15 minutes by van) to pack the necessary gear for the next few days. Here you can leave most of your luggage in safe storage and continue travelling with a small pack with just the necessary items for your next two nights in the jungle. Then you'll take a motorised canoe upriver (approximately 30 minutes for Comfort trips, or 2.5 hours for Original trips) to your jungle lodge in the Madre de Dios area. Once you arrive, there will be time to unpack and unwind. Rooms at the lodges are simple but comfortable, and there are flushing toilets, showers, mosquito nets and kerosene lamps. Original style itinerary: This morning is an early start, with breakfast at around 5–5.30 am. Embark on a jungle trek (around 5.5 km). At times the paths can get quite muddy and some people can find the trek a little exhausting, but the adventure is well worth it! Along the way there will be regular stops and you'll encounter magnificent fauna and flora in their natural habitat. Keep an eye out for macaws, monkeys, peccaries, jabirus, otters and any number of butterfly species. The guides can also teach you about the medicinal properties and practical uses of the plants. Once you reach Cocococha Lake, you'll take a boat ride in search of giant otters. You’ll break for lunch, returning to the lodge. Original style itinerary: Rise early (around 3am) and we will take a boat ride (approximately 2 hours) to visit the parrots of the clay lick. Watch as they ceremoniously feed on the clay. Usually the feeding frenzy lasts 20 to 25 minutes. The salt from the clay is thought to detoxify the birds’ fruit diet. Enjoy some breakfast, then we will make the journey back to the lodge. In the evening, retire to the lodge to enjoy some dinner. Comfort style itinerary: Visit a mammal feeding area in the morning. The mammals are known to feed at any time of the day or night, and they’re more timid than birds, with less regular routine. As a result, mammals are more difficult to see.
