Step away from the iPhone, put the camera down, and gently close the lid of your laptop: it’s time for a Digital Detox through Morocco. Rather than seeking out free wifi hotspots or agonising over the perfect filter for that sunset over Moulay Idriss, experience this incredible part of the world in high-def Real Life. goodbye
    Digital
    welcome

Salaam Aleikum! Say hello to Morocco, and goodbye to your phone, tablet, camera and laptop. Your Digital Detox begins with a welcome meeting at the hotel at 6 pm today, where we’ll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin info – please ensure you have all these details on hand to give to your leader. Look for a note in the lobby or ask reception where the meeting will take place. If you're going to be late, please let the hotel know. There’s no free time included in Casablanca, so we recommend arriving a day or two before your Digital Detox begins so you’ve got time to explore. Modelled after Marseille in France, the city is famous for its art deco buildings and the modern-day masterpiece, the Hassan II Mosque. Spend some time wandering the old medina and the city walls, then jump in a taxi (no Ubers here) t...

    old-fashioned
    wake-up
    one-hour

It’s an early start today (you might like to book an old-fashioned wake-up call!) as we take a one-hour train ride to the historical town of Rabat. Rabat's history is long and colourful, having been host to Roman settlements, pirates and, more recently, the Moroccan parliament. It contains numerous fine Arab monuments, some dating to the Almohad and Merenid dynasties and others that are far older. The earliest known settlement is Sala, occupying an area now known as the Chellah. Store your luggage and spend a few hours strolling through the city's old quarter, then walk up to Kasbah des Oudaias and enjoy spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean. No filters required. Continue on to Meknes by train (approximately three hours), then take a 45-minute taxi through scenic countryside to the sacred pilgrimage village of Moulay Idri...

    archaeological
    Volubilis
    Heritage-listed

Enjoy a tour of the archaeological site of Volubilis with a local guide; the World Heritage-listed site was one of the Roman Empire's most remote bases. The remains make an impressive sight as they come into view on the edge of a long, high plateau. Don’t forget to pack drinking water, hat, sunglasses and sun cream for this tour as it may get hot and you’ll be in the sun. The town is filled with fantastic mosaics along the Decumanus Maximus, many of which remain intact, so keep your eyes open to commit these incredible sights to memory. Check out the sea creature mosaic in the House of Orpheus, and see the exploits and labours of Hercules, which are depicted in stunning detail. Return to the nearby imperial city of Meknes, where you'll have a few hours to explore. Sultan Moulay Ismail set out to build his own version of Vers...

    discovering
    labyrinth
    monument

Today take a guided walk around Fes, discovering the labyrinth of the medina, a living monument to an ancient past and still very much alive with craftsmen, markets, tanneries and mosques. Look out for the Medersa Bou Inania, one of the city's most beautiful buildings, which has recently been restored and is now open to tourists. You'll also visit the famous tannery, known for the iconic view overlooking its dye pits, and a ceramic factory where you can see potters working in the traditional way. The afternoon is free to explore; get lost in the city's maze of streets and alleys, take a mental picture outside the Royal Palace, visit the nearby hills for incredible views, or head to the Palais Jamai for a drink. Watching the sunset over the Medina while a dozen prayer calls vie for attention is an experience you'll remember fo...

    spending
    long-ish
    listening

While you might be used to spending long-ish bus trips listening to podcasts or scrolling through Facebook, pass the four-hour journey to Chefchaouen (aka the Blue City) soaking up the scenery as it whizzes by. Chefchaouen, set against a wide valley and surrounded by the Rif Mountains, is one of the prettiest places in Morocco. It’s easy to feel like you’re in the hills of Spain while wandering this lovely town; the Andalucia-influenced old medina has been lovingly cared for with striking blue and whitewashed houses, red-tiled roofs and artistic doorways. Ease into the relaxed pace of life in this rural retreat. Take a stroll through the ancient medina, go hiking in the Rif mountains or simply sit at a cafe and enjoy the pleasure of time passing by. If you're feeling peckish, head to the Plaza Uta el-Hammam and order the go...

    explore
    Perhaps
    architecture

Today is a free day to explore Chefchaouen. Perhaps take a guided tour of the medina, admire the architecture of the 15th-century Grand Mosque (closed to non-Muslims) and browse the shops in the square selling woven goods and sweet treats. Also within the plaza is the walled fortress of the Kasbah. Wander through the tranquil gardens, check out the ethnographic museum and admire wonderful views from the rooftop. In the evening, tuck into a tasty tagine at a local restaurant or scrub up at a hamam – a traditional Moroccan spa.

    three-hour
    strategic
    importance

Rally the troops for a game of I-Spy on the three-hour bus trip to Tangier, a place of strategic importance to the Mediterranean and the gateway to Africa. Once a hotspot for artists, secret agents and millionaires, Tangier has recently undergone something of a renaissance, thanks to the arrival of the monarch, Mohammed VI of Morocco. His forward-thinking ideas about commerce and tourism have woken up the community to the city’s potential. Today, the city's medina and kasbah are well worth exploring, as are the cafes and patisseries around the Place de la France in the Ville Nouvelle. Perhaps visit the American Legation Museum, the former palace of Dar el-Makhzen or the Caves of Hercules or tuck into a fresh seafood dinner by the port, before boarding an overnight sleeper train to Marrakech.

    Perhaps
    seemingly
    endless

Arrive early into Marrakech, a true feast for the senses, where the day is yours to explore. Perhaps stroll the Medina and the city's seemingly endless mosaic of souqs, each of which is devoted to a separate trade: pottery, woodwork, copper, leather, carpets and spices. Perhaps visit the well-known Koutoubia Mosque and its 12th-century minaret, which was the famous prototype for the Giralda tower in Seville. Wander through the tropical gardens of the French painter Jacques Majorelle (now owned by Yves Saint Laurent), check out the Palais Bahia, a superb example of Muslim architecture, or the ruins of the Palais Badi, reputedly once one of the most beautiful palaces in the world. All of the above can be a challenge to locate (especially without your smartphone’s map app – adios, blue dot!), but that's all part of the joy of ex...
