The Brazilian government is granting the country's armed forces an extra 78 million reais (US$26m) to ensure security at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games

In total, 88,000 soldiers, police officers and members of other public security services are being deployed to the Rio 2016 public safety effort

Troops undertook their first exercises in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday

They will begin patrolling Olympic venues on 24 July

On 4 August, a city-wide security campaign will start operating

As well as the sports venues, there will be a visible military presence on roads, at railway stations and airports, and in major tourist areas

Sports minister Leonardo Picciani said on Tuesday (12 July) that the Ministry of Defence had requested the extra funds from the government budget

"It is the amount needed for the defence forces to carry out their duties and it will be available," he said

Picciani is one of nine ministers who are members of a special cabinet committee which is coordinating Olympic operations

The Rio 2016 Olympic Games begin on 5 August and run until 21 August
