Teaching Through Conceptual Inquiry Workshop Description We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” Einstein This workshop will explore the pedagogy of conceptual inquiry and provide educators with strategies to capture and maximize student's curiosities, to develop practices for recognizing authentic inquiry and creating learning environments that optimize inquiry. It will examine the inquiry process within a conceptual framework and support teachers in planning for the differentiated needs of students through the inquiry process. A key feature of this workshop will be a practical session which will involve participants in experiencing an ‘actual inquiry’. “Inquiry is an approach to learning that involves a process of exploring the natural or material world, and that leads to asking questions, making discoveries, and rigorously testing those discoveries in the search for new understanding.” Foundations Volume 2   Participants will: Define conceptual inquiry What is conceptual inquiry Exploring Inquiry beyond questions Examining how inquiry is not a linear step-by-step process   Recognize inquiry Identifying inquiry indicators in the classroom and/or learning environment The role of the teacher and student in an inquiry process Examining and critiquing through film, some classroom examples   Investigate an Inquiry Process Model  Explore the characteristics of a process model for inquiry (IGE Model for Conceptual Inquiry) Examining a cluster of overlapping processes that can be utilized, combined and revisited as inquiry takes shape How to provoke student curiosity and maximize personal interest   Understand conceptual inquiry in practice Introduce a process for analysis of units for conceptual understanding that informs inquiry Practical strategies and ‘tips’ for teaching and learning through a process of inquiry   Apply the inquiry process – A PRACTICAL SESSION Formulating essential questions Power of questioning, observation and reflection in the inquiry process Documenting or recording of the inquiry   Resource for Inquiry The significance of primary and secondary resources in inquiry Building on from student interests Reflect on where to with our inquiry practice   Audience: All educators interested in improving their understanding of inquiry in practice.   Workshop Leader Biography: Andrea MULLER is an experienced international teacher and consultant who has worked in many schools throughout New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Middle East and Europe. In these settings, she has had roles that include extensive classroom teaching, curriculum coordination, curriculum advisory K-12, and programme manager with the IBAN. Her current role is Regional Director and consultant with Innovative Global Education. Critical to this role is leading and evolving sustainable models that support enduring professional learning. These models involve developing and designing curriculum frameworks; working in partnership with school leadership and teaching teams to review and refine planning, teaching and assessment and supporting significant shifts in pedagogy in both local and international settings. The shuttle service will run from 8:00 am on the 31st October and the 1st November, and will do the reverse and drop people off at the end of the day. Note: If you are staying at U Sukhumvit (300 meters from NIST Internaitonal School) and the Kingston Suites (700 meters from NIST) and would like to walk, you should turn left as you come out of the hotel and keep walking towards the end of the Soi, the school will be on your right hand side.   The Kingston Suites and U Sukhumvit also have shuttle services that can take guests to nearby places, including NIST Internaitonal School, the nearest Sky Train station, Terminal 21, etc.
