What does social enterprise really mean? And how is social entrepreneurship in Asia different than in the rest of the world?  Social enterprises, or companies that “Do well while doing good” are on the rise in Asia. They are businesses that have a strong social mission, typically trying to address a problem that will improve living standards in their communities, while functioning like a regular business. New legal frameworks are being put in place to deal with this type of company and some investors and support programs are specifically focused on social enterprises. Starting from a review of key data and trends based on GEM's 2015 Social Entrepreneurship report, we'll discuss the social entrepreneurship landscape through the real life experiences of two social entrepreneurs.  Virginia TanCo-founder, Lean In China & HerStartup Virginia Tan is the founder and managing director of Lean In China, a women’s platform with over 80,000 members across more than 25 cities and 50 universities in China,  which supports the goals and aspirations of Chinese women. She also founded the Her Startup competition in 2015, the first global tech entrepreneurship competition for female founders, which held 12 rounds across China, USA and South East Asia in 2016.  Together with two millenial Chinese women, she is also a founding partner of Orenda Ventures, an early stage venture capital fund investing in technologies and startups emerging out of the Her Startup competition, to address the funding needs of women entrepreneurs as well as seeking to use technology as a bridge to build deeper ties between East and West as well as encourage social innovation in China. Read more here.  Dr. Ulrike GuelickSenior Researcher & Lecturer, Bangkok University Dr. Guelich holds a PhD in Entrepreneurship and a Master in Business Administration and brings over 25 years of experience as a female entrepreneur (4th generation in a family business) in two sectors: (1) a 24/7 manufacturing plant in the brick industry and (2) software supplier for the control of gluing robots in the automotive industry. She leads the research in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Project in Thailand contributing to the global GEM research project, initiated by Babson College, USA and London Business School, UK. She is currently senior researcher and lecturer at Bangkok University, Bangkok / Thailand and visiting faculty at several universities.
