Welcome to Japan. You can arrive at the hotel at any time, as there are no activities planned for today. A welcome pack containing a welcome letter, your trip itinerary, relevant tickets, a feedback card and general information on the country will be waiting for you at your hotel. If you arrive early, a great place to begin your explorations of larger-than-life Tokyo is Ueno Park, which boasts many excellent galleries and museums.

Travel by train and public bus to Mt Fuji 5th Station (2,400 m). While there are often many other tourists there, Mt Fuji 5th Station is the best spot from which to take in the splendour of Mt Fuji, Japan's highest mountain (3,776 m). It's the best developed and the easiest to access by public transport. From this point forward, automobiles are not permitted. There are a few restaurants and souvenir shops here to explore, and of course plenty of time to take photos of the majestic view. You might see hikers stretching and preparing for their treks, especially during the official climbing season (July 1 to August 31). Before returning to Tokyo today, you'll make a visit to the Fujiyoshida Sengen Shrine. It's surrounded by dense forest and is set off from the road by a long approach lined by stone lanterns and shaded by cedar trees. The shrine's red-painted buildings include a main hall built in 1615, a dancing stage, and a few auxiliary buildings. Some hikers maintain the tradition of beginning their ascent with a prayer at the shrine. Notes: Be sure to bring some warm clothes even if you are travelling in the summer months. Remember that the weather can change rapidly here, which means there are no guarantees of a view of the mountain. Sometimes visits must be cancelled. If the weather is particularly bad, your local team might try to swap activities around so that the Mt Fuji visit coincides with the best day of weather.

Firstly, enjoy some free time. You have until late afternoon to explore this unique city further before your Tokyo food adventure. While Tokyo is renowned for its frenetic energy and progressive architecture, it has a distinctly warmer, friendlier side which tends to reveal itself outside of working hours. Visiting the lively Senso-ji temple district of Asakusa is a must, as is the Sumida River, along which you can take a boat cruise down to the gorgeous Hama Rikyu gardens. Perhaps make your way to the shopping district of Ginza where, depending on the theatre schedule, you may have the chance to see a short performance of Kabuki, one of Japan’s more spectacular performing arts. Early risers might like to get amongst the action at the Tsukiji fish market. In the late afternoon, take public transport to JR Yurakucho Station to meet your guide for the evening at the Central Exit (near the ticket machines and Yoshinoya restaurant) at 5 pm. Throughout your Tokyo food tour, your local guide will explain the history of food and places you visit, sharing with you his own personal experiences and food-related family traditions and customs during the tour. Kick things off in Yakitori Alley, an area with many casual bar-style restaurants. This is the birthplace of yakitori, an appetizer that's one of many local favourites. Enjoy some sake or beer, then some yakitori, each variety of which is accompanied by its own 'tare' (sauce). Continue to Tsukishima to visit 'Monja' Street, where the delicious pan-fried monja-yaki is said to have originated. Chat with the cook as your food is chopped, mixed, grilled and served fresh on the hotplate. In true local style, you’ll use a small metal spatula for cutting it to pieces, then chopsticks to eat with right from the grill. Take a quick stroll through Ginza, where you can find great confectionery shops and learn about the rich variety of traditional Japanese sweets, sampling one yourself of course. Finally you'll stop in at a local pub for some more drinks, at which point you are welcome to stay longer or return to the starting point with your guide. Your guide can also recommend other cool local bars in small alleys, or perhaps a karaoke place for those looking to carry on into the night. Notes: The legal drinking age in Japan is 20. Travellers under 20 will, of course, be served non-alcoholic drinks only.
