Some of the world’s leading archers and the sport’s international federation hailed the venue and organisation of the Rio 2016 archery test event, which came to an end at the Sambódromo on Tuesday (22 September)

“It’s a great venue and it’s an honour to compete at the home of Rio Carnival, such an iconic place for Brazilians,” said Sjef van den Berg of the Netherlands, who took silver in the men’s individual event at the the Aquece Rio International Archery Challenge

“The event was really good, well organised

”Amongst a field containing some of the world’s best archers, Van den Berg finished behind former world no

1 Kim Woojin of the Republic of Korea, who was also pleased with the venue and organisation

“I’m very happy with the arena and the people here were also very impressive,” said Kim

“They were cheering during and before the competition

I like the environment, the locals, I liked it a lot

The Rio 2016 organising committee had 593 people working (77 full-time staff, 378 contractors and 138 volunteers) across 28 departments

“We are very satisfied with the all the operations tested here, it has been a successful event,” said Juan Carlos Holgado, event director of World Archery

“The Sambódromo will be a great Olympic venue

The most important part of the test was for the athletes, and everything was great for them to test the competition conditions for next year

”Holgado also confirmed that the noise of passing traffic did not disturb the athletes, a theme elaborated on by Agberto Guimarães, executive director of sport at Rio 2016

“Test events are a chance for us to see what can be perfected for next year,” he said

“We learnt, for example, that the noise of passing traffic could interfere with broadcast quality

However, redirecting traffic, which would cause considerable disruption to the local population, will be the last resort to solve this

We installed sound-proof walls for the test event, and now we will talk with the international federation to find the best solution for next year

“We’ll have a national competition to select our Olympic team and hopefully I will be part of it and be here in Rio again next year

”Brown said: “It’s absolutely special to compete at the Sambódromo

It has a rich history so it’s really cool and exciting to compete here
