Four hundred guests, top Brazilian DJs Zé Pretinho and Rafael Lima, a flashmob with 13 dancers representing the ethnic diversity of Brazil, a buffet showcasing the best of Brazilian  gastronomy and, of course, a bar offering fruit caipirinhas

All of this at one of Rio’s chicest venues, but the party was still lacking something

Everyone was saying the same thing

When would the special guest arrive? Would everyone be able to get a selfie? They were waiting for the big star of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games – the torch that had been revealed earlier in the day in Brasília, and had since been touring TV stations

Then, at 10pm, after a showing of the inspirational torch video, the big screen split in two, revealing the VIP guest in all its glory

Excitement overflowed at the Brazilian Jockey Club in Lagoa

“This is without doubt the most beautiful torch in the history of the Games,” announced Carlos Nuzman, the Rio 2016 President

His statement was endorsed by a wave of cheers and applause

Olympic volleyball champion Nalbert Bitencourt (right) helps gets the dancefloor going   One of the principal icons of the Olympic Games, which will be staged in South America for the first time next year, the torch was the belle of the ball

Guests queued for the rest of the night to take their photo with it

“Everyone wants to get close to this poignant symbol

I was in Brasília and was lucky enough to be one of the first to get close to it

For a few minutes it was virtually just for me”, said a proud Nalbert Bitencourt, who won Olympic gold with the Brazilian volleyball team at the Athens 2004 Games

While the choreography of Klaus Duarte guided the flashmob inspired by the movement of various types of Olympic athlete, promoted by Coca-Cola, and two booths installed by Bradesco collected video recommendations for people who deserve to carry the torch during the relay, Isabel Swan – the first woman to earn Brazil an Olympic medal in sailing, bronze at Beijing 2008 – was in the lounge mounted by Nissan to present two of the cars emblazoned with the look of torch

Swan explained how the symbol had influenced her as a child

“I was a kid and was asleep and my godmother (sailor Claudia Swan) arrived from the Barcelona 1992 Games with mascot dolls and photos of the torch,” she said

“It’s beautiful to now see us bringing these icons to Brazil, so people here can be close to it

”The flashmob was inspired by the movement of Olympic athletes Also present was Bernard Rajzman, an International Olympic Committee member and one of Brazil’s silver-medal winning volleyball team at the Los Angeles 1984 Games

“I am sure that we have here the most beautiful Olympic torch I have ever seen,” he said

The party continued into the early hours, with the torch always the centre of attention

However, one special guest circulated without drawing much attention

He was not an Olympian or a member of the Rio 2016 Organising Committe, but he glowed with a special satisfaction

“To design a symbol that will enter into history and stay forever in the Olympic Museum is a sensation I never imagined I would have”, said Gustavo Chelles, of design studio Chelles & Hayashi, who created the torch inspired by the geography of Rio de Janeiro
