Twice world champions in 2003 and 2007, Germany has qualified for the women's football at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games

The country will be celebrating this week, following the news that both their women’s and men’s teams are through to the Games

Confirmation was published on International Federation website

The women won their Olympic spot on Saturday (20 June) when they beat Sweden 4-1 and qualified for the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada, thereby ensuring their position as one of the three best European teams in the tournament and fulfilling the criteria to qualify for the Olympics

France also qualified for the Olympic Games, after their 3-0 win over the Republic of Korea on Sunday (21 June) launched them into the top-three European teams in the tournament and secured their place in the quarter-finals

The fight for the third European team in the top-three – and a third European Olympic spot – is still underway

Although England beat Norway and qualified for the World Cup quarter-finals on Monday (June 22), the team are not eligible to qualify for the Olympic Games as the football federations of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales have failed to reach an agreement over how to represent Great Britain in 2016

And since the Netherlands lost to Japan in the last of the round-of-eight matches on Tuesday (23), the fight for the third Olympic spot continues between the four European teams who made it to the World Cup round-of-eight, but who were defeated in their quest for a place in the quarter-finals

The teams – Norway, Switzerland, Sweden and the Netherlands – will go head-to-head in a play-off organised by UEFA, which has yet to be scheduled, and with the teams conscious that they have been granted a reprieve, it promises to be an electrifying battle

So far, four teams have qualified for the women's tournament at Rio 2016 (Brazil, Colombia, France and Germany)

After the World Cup, the next crop of countries will qualify in October via continental tournaments in Africa (worth two Olympic places) and Oceania (one)

In 2016, Olympic qualifying tournaments in Asia, and North and Central America and the Caribbean, will yield a further two Olympic berths each, closing the Olympic line-up at 12 countries

Rio2016

com is not an absolute authority on qualification for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which is an ongoing process

Final places will only be confirmed in July 2016 (for the Olympic Games) and August 2016 (for the Paralympic Games)

The qualification systems are defined by each sport’s respective International Federation and the International Olympic Committee or International Paralympic Committee, and are subject to change

When an athlete or team wins a quota place for their nation, the final decision on whether this ‘slot’ is used and which athletes are sent is taken by the respective National Olympic Committee or National Paralympic Committee (NOC or NPC)

Even when athletes win a ‘nominal’ place for themselves, NOCs/NPCs may have to decide who to send if the number of qualified athletes from one country exceeds the quota
