The Rio 2016 organising committee revealed on Wednesday (16 September) plans to contract 90,000 people to work at next year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games

While 85,000 outsourced staff will be hired by third-party companies, there will also be 5,000 vacancies at the organising committee – for which candidates will be recruited by ManpowerGroup, a USA-based multinational human resources consulting firm

As well as boosting the Brazilian jobs market, it isexpected that the huge recruitment drive will provide a range of new skills for the workforce, leaving a legacy to the service sector in particular, along with providing an unforgettable experience for those involved in the staging of the world’s biggest sporting event in South America, for the first time

“We are not only offering Jobs, but a chance to grow and have a unique life experience and improve your CV,” said Rio 2016 human resources director Henrique Gonzalez

“Few people have the chance to work on a project surrounded by the Olympic and Paralympic values, which promote teamwork, sport, education, health, integrity and peace between nations

”While the first 250 of the 5,000 committee jobs are already advertised on ManpowerGroup’s Brazilian site, applicants need to have a Brazilian CPF number to register

The positions that are suitable for foreign candidates will be advertised on the ManpowerGroup websites in the relevant countries (the company has a presence in 82 nations)

“This is the largest number of jobs within one project that the company has ever offered,” said Riccardo Barberis, CEO of ManpowerGroup

“We are speaking about paid positions in different areas, with opportunities for everybody

”There are currently  1,800 staff at the Rio 2016 organising committee, including 104 non-Brazilians, with the overall figure set to reach 2,000 by the end of 2015

Of the 5,000 temporary roles (ranging from three months to one year) that ManpowerGroup will fill at Rio 2016 next year, 70 per cent are considered ‘leadership posts’ – in which successful candidates will coordinate a team in specialised areas such as broadcast, arrivals and departures, field of play operations and technology

The majority of salaries vary between R$1,500 (US$392) and R$6,000 (US$1,566) per month

The 85,000 outsourced jobs – for which ManpowerGroup will provide a database of candidates for the third-party contractors – are mostly in the service area, featuring roles such as drivers, sushi chefs, bar staff and butchers

As these are Games-time roles, they will be advertised closer to the event

The majority of the jobs will be based in Rio de Janeiro, but there will also be oppportunities in the football co-host cities: Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Manaus, Salvador and São Paulo
